Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Lemosho Gate – Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,650m)
After breakfast in Moshi or Arusha, drive to Lemosho Gate (2,100m) for registration and briefing. Begin your trek through the dense rainforest, home to colobus monkeys and exotic birds. The trail gradually ascends to Mti Mkubwa Camp, your first overnight stop.
Hiking Distance: 6 km / 3–4 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
Meals: Lunch & Dinner
Overnight: Mti Mkubwa Camp
Travel Tip: Pack lightweight rain gear — rainforest areas are humid and often misty.
Day 2: Mti Mkubwa – Shira 1 Camp (3,505m)
Leave the rainforest behind and enter the heath and moorland zone. The trail opens to vast landscapes with stunning views of Shira Ridge. You’ll cross streams and ridges before reaching Shira 1 Camp, located on the expansive Shira Plateau.
Hiking Distance: 8 km / 5–6 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Overnight: Shira 1 Camp
Travel Tip: Use sunscreen even on cloudy days — UV exposure increases with altitude.
Day 3: Shira 1 – Shira 2 Camp (3,850m)
Today’s trek is an easy acclimatization walk across the Shira Plateau. The open highlands provide fantastic views of Kibo Peak and the plains below. Arrive at Shira 2 Camp in the afternoon for rest and dinner, preparing for higher altitudes ahead.
Hiking Distance: 7 km / 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Moorland
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Overnight: Shira 2 Camp
Travel Tip: Stay hydrated and walk slowly — this helps your body adapt to altitude.
Day 4: Shira 2 – Lava Tower (4,630m) – Barranco Camp (3,976m)
A crucial day for acclimatization! Trek east toward the Lava Tower, where you’ll reach 4,630 meters — then descend to Barranco Camp. This “climb high, sleep low” approach boosts your acclimatization and helps prevent altitude sickness.
Barranco Camp sits beneath the dramatic Barranco Wall, one of the most photographed sites on Kilimanjaro.
Hiking Distance: 10 km / 6–7 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Overnight: Barranco Camp
Travel Tip: Even if you lose appetite at altitude, eat small portions often to maintain energy.
Day 5: Barranco – Karanga Camp (3,995m)
Start the day by tackling the Barranco Wall, a fun and scenic climb with stunning panoramic views. The trail continues through rolling hills to Karanga Camp, offering a relaxed afternoon and perfect acclimatization before summit day.
Hiking Distance: 6 km / 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Overnight: Karanga Camp
Travel Tip: Conserve energy — the summit push begins late tomorrow night.
Day 6: Karanga – Barafu Camp (4,673m)
Today’s trek leads to Barafu Camp, the final base before the summit. The terrain is rocky and exposed, with awe-inspiring views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Arrive early for rest and an early dinner before the midnight summit attempt.
Hiking Distance: 4 km / 3–4 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Overnight: Barafu Camp
Travel Tip: Prepare your gear, snacks, and headlamp before sleeping — the summit climb starts before dawn.
Day 7: Barafu – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Mweka Camp (3,100m)
Wake up around midnight and begin the most challenging part of your trek — the ascent to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Trek steadily through switchbacks to Stella Point (5,756m), where you’ll rest briefly before the final push to Uhuru Peak.
Reaching the summit is an emotional and breathtaking experience — watch the sunrise above the clouds, illuminating the glaciers and crater rim. After celebration photos, descend to Mweka Camp for a well-earned rest.
Hiking Distance: 17 km / 10–12 hours
Habitat: Arctic, then Moorland
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Overnight: Mweka Camp
Travel Tip: Pace yourself and follow your guide’s rhythm — “pole pole” (slowly) is the key to success.
Day 8: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate (1,640m)
After breakfast, descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where successful climbers receive summit certificates. Celebrate your achievement before returning to Moshi or Arusha for a hot shower and rest.
